It's impossible to exaggerate the feeling one had walking out of Phantom Menace in 1999 vs Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. So this wasn't just about unmatchable expectations & nerdiness. The former was an abject failure & disappointment. The latter was & remains a towering work of staggering genius.

I was 9 when Phantom Menace came out and nobody liked anything except the podrace, the lightsaber fights, and a few of the performances. Then Attack of the Clones came out and people hated that even more. Revenge of the Sith being "fine" was considered a win. The revisionist history is crazy.
