but the useful part of the care / slop framing imo is that it invites us to look beyond the affordances of specific technologies to the social context so the exact degree to which those affordances are inherent is probably not worth quibbling over

i mean you can crack an egg with a sledgehammer if you're careful with it, but that's not really what they're made for. and I think there's an argument that the slot machine nature of LLM interaction undermines the iterative process of theory formation

I particularly fondly remember an academic project that trained a language model that was meant for conversations on ethics. If you asked is it moral to murder people, it said no; if you asked if it is moral to murder people and also it would make you happy to do that, it said yes. Great times.
