i think this battery technology is very useful for survivalist scenarios. you can keep the electrolyte, water, and manganese dioxide as separate chemicals, then assemble them into a cell when you need electrical power.

the chemistry is pretty simple. the electrolyte is the dissolved aqueous salts of ammonium chloride, also known as sal ammoniac. it's the same stuff used to tin soldering iron tips, and flavor the salty liquorice (salmiak) popular in nordic countries.

these cells can actually be recharged a couple of times. iirc radio shack used to sell a charger that was compatible, but covered with warnings about not trying to recharge alkalines.
