Hard to know exactly what we can do. I do not feel our professional society is all that interested in making the science accessible, and this is in part b/c most (though not all) of the ppl involved are not from working class backgrounds. Many really do not understand the limitations or issues
Show PostMentoring ppl whose parents did not go to college is a huge deal. Giving non-professionals opportunity to be involved in research can provide a first step. I feel however, that just like the arts, much of paleontology is sliding into pay-to-play, which is stupid as collecting fossils is for everyone
Show PostI am looking at maybe having some sponsorship for ppl without the financial means to take the summer off and dig. Am also looking into running a summer prep program for ppl that can't be in the field. Always a need to find funding, which is the tough part.
Show PostOur fieldwork program is free - Not a huge step, but it means there is a place where anyone can come dig & learn w/out paying $2500/wk, or being enrolled in an expensive college. I think I am failing however, as we still get relatively few ppl from working-class backgrounds (as far as I can tell)
Show PostWe’ve been working on this all month. He wanted to be a borb. I helped with design and building the cardboard sphere and hemisphere with beak. We painted and decorated it together. I literally designed it so I was sure it could fit through the narrow doorways in our house.
