when you just fetch from blueskys CDN youre dependent on bluesky how they make their CDN what kind of transformations are available to you which blobs they will and wont serve the format of URLs whether youre actually sure the blobs given are the blobs you asked for. now its not hard to use your own

cases of this is the bluesky CDN. if your atproto app uses media in any form youre likely fetching it from the bluesky CDN. some apps even have their own custom caching ... in front of the bluesky CDN. lyna outlines a bunch of reasons why thats probably a bad idea but the core of it is dependence

i yapped about how excited i was for this back when lyna did the teaser post but imma yap again. the atproto community has a bit of an issue that we all know we dont *need* to rely on bluesky infra structure but a lot of us end up doing so anyways. one of the most wide spread and least talked about
