I think the MBTA was working with the developers of the two projects on either side of Mass Ave to use the pre-existing pedestrian underpass and upgrade the station to full accessibility. But the project on the same side of the street as the station got canceled.

This is the next iteration of NYC streets. We need to move beyond painting bike lanes on the street or plunking down outdoor dining booths to entirely new designs with greenery, better paving stones that speaks to the pedestrian experience, seating, etc.
