So to summarize, EA likes super-predictable production schedules and deep monetization wells, and that makes them a bad fit for RPGs, and I certainly hope the next RPG studio they consider acquiring take that into consideration before they say 'yes'.
Show PostBut making an RPG is a lot harder than just updating the roster and adding a single feature in Madden (which is how Madden can maintain their cadence). And it's even harder when your RPG has Bioware-quality production values for the story bits.
Show PostBecause fundamentally, what happened to Bioware wasn't new. It happened to Origin too. When I was at Origin, I remember EA wanting an Ultima every year.
Show PostBut that being said, EA's long had a blind spot about RPGs and other more expensive games, because the backbone of their business is games like Madden and FIFA, which is to say, games that can reliably make crazy money every year.
Show PostDon't get me wrong. EA's position isn't COMPLETELY ridiculous. Bioware budgets were always, always wildly out of control the entire time I was there. Hell, I helped ship one of them.
