I like the German idea (I’m told) that charities represent a failure of government. I think our position is probably bleaker, in that the NGO system can act as a slush fund for party supporters. Execs on 200 grand a year, with no meaning oversight.

It can, but most Irish ones fill critical needs and start because the Irish government is very much not interested in meeting that need.

I wonder why we need NGOs in Ireland? Could it be because the government doesn't want to actually do anything hard itself, and would rather throw a few euro at a bunch of charities and strut around on the basis on that? Surely not!

It's so great that the Irish government has decided to make the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre their next punching bag rather than, you know, deal with anything else.
