On this day in 1979, at a Halloween party at The Zoo in Athens, Gangster performed. Fronted by Michael Stipe, the set included ‘Under My Thumb’. After the show, at a costume party at the church, Michael met two people with whom he would become close friends: Carol Levy and Jeremy Ayers.

The $90 bribe came from the $2 billion Medicare Improvement Fund—marking the first time the fund has been tapped to directly pay beneficiaries. It should have remained there to improve Medicare for everyone, not just the peoiple who are not enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.
