As we think about the future of carsharing, don't forget about the possibility of a member-owned cooperative, like the brilliant www.modo.coop in Vancouver. There's no reason after a fail as spectacular as Hourcar's that our communities must rely on fickle government or philanthropic funding.

Some of y'all know this, but when I was first setting up HOURCAR (alongside several brilliant and essential collaborators!) we looked hard at making it a cooperative. I decided against that because we needed seed funding, and major funders really prefer the easy tax dodge of a 501c3 nonprofit.

Or just grab your housemates, friends and neighbors and set up your own carshare. Buy an old Outback. Insure it (might be an interesting conversation with an agent!) Then track use and costs and allocate fairly with some software, maybe this free one: www.co-oto.app
