One of the reasons I object to the denial that still dominates conventional wisdom—the war isn't that bad, it'll be over soon and things'll go back to normal—is it means that much of the blame for losing will land on future leaders who admit the problems, rather than current leaders who caused them.

Iran is stronger, with more influence over the region, and the government is more hardline. That's already locked in. Trump made it happen, and is unable to undo it. So what should a future, more responsible president do? I don't have a better answer than cut our losses and deal with the fallout.

The US should end the Iran war rather than digging the hole deeper, and Democrats should do what they can to make it happen. But we shouldn't kid ourselves. Trump has so badly damaged America's strategic position that ending the war will look like choosing a bad loss over going for partial success.
