8/10. IREZUMI/THE SPIDER TATTOO (Yasuzo Masumura, Japan, 1966) Melodrama meets horror. I was lucky enough to binge through 10 new restorations of Masumura’s films. They’re ripe, heady and inventive. Hope that they all see the light of day in the UK.

IREZUMI (Yasuzo Masumura, 1966). This was excellent. A heady, intoxicating tale of desire, obsession, revenge & female agency, based on a short story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki: SHISEI/THE TATTOOIST. The vivid cinematography, exquisite costumes and elegantly framed shots all stand out. >> #FilmSky
