Research, especially in a new area like #longCOVID, needs clinical experience, but it also needs the rigour and depth of understanding of advanced scientific training. Science is a specialty (in fact, a whole family of them) as complex and nuanced as any medical specialty. You can't just wing it.

An MD is not a PhD. And given equivalent experience, someone with an MD is exactly as well trained to practice science in a given field as someone with a PhD in that area is to practice medicine.
