I get up. I stare at the ceiling. I doomscroll. I consider, well, maybe I shouldn't today. Maybe I can take this day off. I feel like shit anyway, everything is going wrong, it's a waste of time. Maybe it will kill me. But, for whatever reason, I find myself out there with my shoes on.

I have chronic anxiety and OCD. Every so often a trash popsci article makes everyone tell me that, actually, running is bad for me. I know better than to believe it, but my brain is built to absorb that sort of thing, so I'm constantly hearing a chorus of memento mori in my skull as I run.

I'm not fast. I have no natural athletic talent. I started running in my mid 30s -- shit, I even injured myself like two weeks in because I was starting from, well, nothing. I spent all last winter training through blizzard after blizzard, only to injure myself on literally the first warm day.
