Referees need to shake off their schoolmaster pretensions. Far too obsessed with picking on things they deem petulant or childish, making examples, rather than doing their actual service to players in protecting them. The players are the show, not them.

Nobody cares about player safety. And the game will not be safe until we can rid it of the scourge of 16-year-olds moving their foot towards their opponent a little bit.

Looking forward to countless other examples of (actual) violent conduct and kick outs not being punished this season, and then being told we're the crazy ones. The people running the game are allergic to common sense and they aren't bothered about player safety - only about optics.

A three game ban for what Dowman did is a joke. There is a fundamental problem in the English game with not punishing actual violent challenges and over-punishing petulant reactions to violent challenges.
