On October 30 1914 the hospital ship Rohilla struck rocks in dreadful conditions not far from Whitby whilst on a mission to evacuate wounded soldiers from Dunkirk. One of the rescued was ex-Titanic stewardess Mary Roberts who was reported to have said that the experience was worse than the Titanic!

On 29th October 1918, 22 year old Edward John "Ned" Parfett was killed during the final few weeks of the First World War when a shell landed on the Quartermaster's stores as he was picking up clothes before taking leave. 6 years previously he was pictured selling papers outside Oceanic House.
