jean-luc picard was one of the best, least-toxic, examples of masculinity available to me as a kid. He was someone who showed that refined tastes didn't have to pair with terrible politics: you can be a space communist who leads from the front and loves classical music and theater.

Yeah, it made me sadder than I'd thought it would. Through their friendship we got to know both of them as people, and I think it showed to those who still needed to learn that gay people don't give you cooties.

And a lot of this comes from Stewart's performance. He'd always look for the more thoughtful way to play a line, and the writers reacted to that. It was a counter-intuitive piece of casting that paid off in spades.
