I mentally include those who aren’t in “paid employment” in that descriptor. Being disabled, ill, unemployed is still “work”. Hell, it can be just as exhausting being unwell as it is doing a 9-5 at times.

I find the “regular, hard working New Zealander” line a bit uncomfortable…..feels like it’s excluding those who can’t/aren’t working for whatever reason. (Yes I’m sure it was a well intended comment but it does tend to reinforce the idea that work/productivity = worth)

I lived in a beautiful state house in Lower Hutt. One of those 2-storey attached ones. I absolutely loved it. Yes, the kitchen was sunny and open and wonderful! SO much storage. The HUGE bath was incredible. The native timber floors. *swoons*
