A hill I will die on is that Halloween is the best american holiday because it’s the only truly community-oriented one. Trunk or treat is bad because Halloween is our culture’s main way to teach children to meet their neighbors.

I still remember being silently devastated at 11ish when I was told it would be my last year trick-or-treating because next year I'd be "too old." It had never occurred to me that I wouldn't be allowed to go every year forever, or at least as long as I wanted to.

My parents decided I was too old for trick-or-treating just before I turned 13. I thought that was bullshit, doubly so as I had an 11-year-old brother who they weren't taking trick-or-treating on his own.
