Similarly, I have a problem when characters in books do bad things that I don't like, it means the book is toxic and the author is an unsafe person

If you're mad at a film for doing this stuff, it's always worth pausing to ask yourself: Am I annoyed because the movie is manipulating me? Or annoyed because it's manipulating me POORLY? Or annoyed because I don't want to feel what I'm feeling? Or am I just faulting the movie for having a strategy?

This is part of a larger issue with the way movies are interpreted that regularly bleeds into discussions of fictional films. Movies that try to move you to tears are "manipulative," "tear-jerking," "Oscar bait." But movies that try to pump your adrenaline, make you laugh, or scare you...are movies.

I'm reading some of the You Can See Everything backlash stuff, and am honestly baffled at people saying accusatorily that the movie manipulates its audience by deciding how and when it reveals what it reveals. Um...yes. Related question: Have you ever seen a documentary before?
