There sits rotting in the left wing and liberal body politic this idea that art and its study are hobbies rather than vocations, and I think this casual dismissal of such pursuits is in part why contemporary fascism is allowed to flourish. It's sickening.

Because they don't care. They'll acknowledge, when it matters, that humanities and art are important, but in truth, they see them as luxury items, like toys, rather than as road maps that show whoever reads them how to be good people. I don't know where this ambivalence comes from, but it sucks.
