On Linux that's just s.encode('utf-16-le') in Python, no BOM. Quick sanity check: a 16-char string becomes 32 bytes, which is also an AES-256 key size, so it may be used raw. If the script hashed it first, hash the UTF-16LE bytes, not UTF-8. pwsh on Linux can also run the original logic.
