Show PostI entirely agree. No experience myself but when my grandmother and great aunt were very old they talked to us about living in London during the Blitz. No fun at all.
Show PostI think likewise the main personal experience of WW2 that got reported to me growing up was a friend of my dad's who was a child during the Blitz and described how for years of his life he was instinctively afraid of the sound of airplanes overhead. Mass violence does not seem glamorous to me.

Show PostEthics in fact does a version of this, as they have a review process then a "whole board discussion" about every paper that gets through the review that itself has a 50% rejection rate. I am sure they don't do anything so efficient as flip a coin, but that is what I think they are effectively doing.
