It's pretty scandalous how few new homes were permitted under Tom Tunney in the 44th ward. Between 2010 and 2022, just 134 units per year. Median household income over $100k! The northside of Chicago just doesn't pull its weight with new housing at all. Creates pressure elsewhere.

Kantha is a similar technique, but using a running stitch and larger scraps of material. Chindi is the leftover of the leftover. By making cloth in this way, the resources used to grow cotton, spin yarn, and weave fabric are not wasted. Left is kantha; right is chindi.

Photo from the night Mamdani launched his campaign. He appears to be wearing a jacket made from chindi, which is an Indian fabric made by upcycling leftover materials. Here, small scraps of material from previous projects are backed by cotton muslin and sewn together using an embroidery stitch.
