Very true. My colleagues Roman Beck and Christoph Kreiterling have submitted a paper on the Total Cost of Dependency which tries to quantify this. we will turn this into an open source tool once the paper has been peer reviewed

it sucks soooooo bad. egg on my face for buying into it at all, but the money is spent and i am not jumping at the opportunity to sink that cost

a lot of the vsts themselves would theoretically run with yabridge or w/e it was called, as ive pirated few available that i legally own to test standalone. but not enough do, that is a pain to hunt down and set up, and it doesn't account for software like Traktor that is essential for my work
