Show PostI think blueskys animus (likely justified) towards Turek is swinging perceptions of what's happening in Iowa, which is a full on rebellion against the GOP. The race is no worse than toss up, probably lean d.
Show PostIn short, then, what changed in the Late Republic was not a burst of 'judicial retaliation,' but rather a weaker Senate permitting certain politicians to dodge legal accountability for their acts for many years at a time. That was an enormous mistake, as it turned out.
Show PostEarlier in the Republic, a man like Caesar would have cycled out of office earlier and been compelled to submit to the judgement of others - a jury, an election, or the Senate itself - to get access to political power again (or avoid punishment). That enforced a more beneficial style of leadership.
Show PostOf course Caesar angled for that long command (and its renewal halfway through) specifically to avoid the risk of having to account to a jury for his actions. The mistake, frankly, was letting him defer accountability for so long.
