Austen’s work isn’t Regency romance novels (this isn’t a criticism of the romance genre); they’re carefully written critiques; which at times are severe. It does the works an injustice to strip all that away for just the plot with more contemporary inferences and mores. ie these are very literary

Austen sharply and keenly observed, wrote what she saw, sharply and keenly, with wit, humor and withering satire. She was already *it* you didn’t need to make up scenes to inject sardonic humor eg Netflix’s terrible Persuasion
