People have asked me for suggestions of TNG episodes to watch in honor of Sir Patrick Stewart's death, and my recommendation hasn't been "The Inner Light" or "Chain of Command" or "The Best of Both Worlds" or (shudder) "The Drumhead" (which is hot garbage), but rather "The Defector." 1/4

It's one of Stewart's best performances as Jean-Luc Picard, as he is confronted with a Romulan defector with a deadly story about a secret base being built in the Neutral Zone. He's thoughtful, skeptical, restrained, but never cowardly or overly cautious. And he has a brilliant backup plan. 2/4

Plus his confrontation with Admiral Jarok is a master class. "You have already betrayed your people! You've made your choices, sir! You're a traitor! Now if the bitter pill of that is too much to swallow then I am truly sorry." 3/4

Three other reasons to pick this episode: Jarok is played by James Sloyan, who also died this year. It's got the late great Andreas Katsulas in it. And it opens with Data doing a scene from HENRY V on the holodeck, and Stewart doubles as one of the soldiers. A great, underrated episode. 4/4
