what I'm not sure about is: is building a custom thing from scratch every time you run into an old problem with existing solutions a good thing to do? If everyone starts doing this, what does that world look like? What happens to open source software?

Exactly! It dovetails with another comment I made elsewher about how a study years ago showed that Norway had a higher rate of entrepreneurship per capita than the U.S., precisely because the social safety net vastly reduced the downside personal financial risk It literally makes people flourish!
