I think "consciousness is a grab bag of capabilities that are related mostly because they co-occur in humans" explains a lot of confusion in the debate, and once you accept that you can do actually interesting work to see which of those specific capabilities are present/absent in ai.

"is AI conscious" is a way less interesting question to me than "precisely which human cognitive functions can be offloaded to silicon & scaled" because the first feels like a language game & the second is actually being answered in interesting ways
