Proper socks is the way to go whatever the activity. When I've used two pairs it feels like my foot is sliding inside the second sock instead of mildly rubbing against internal seams etc. I should say I've used this method in winter with heavy duty thick wool socks and heavy weight winter boots

Sorry to hear that. All i can suggest is to buy the same shoes a size up from what you currently have. Hopefully that should help
