it's interesting how many of you point to the day obama won the election. remember how frustrating it was to watch obamacare get cut off at the knees? and his admin's normalization of drone warfare? the 2008 recession can't be understated either. one happy/hopeful day... years of shit swamp trudging
Show Postgiven that "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People (a song about a school shooting that sounds bizarrely, scarily happy) is also part of the musical oeuvre that produced the tracks on any obama-era indie poptimism playlist and that seems relevant to me
Show Posti would argue that people were writing this music as a faked smile, not because it was reflective of a real cultural attitude. it's not like things were "good" or "happy" post-9/11 or during the 2008 recession so a lot of this music scans to me as like "AAAAAAAAAAA PRETEND WE ARE OKAY AAAAAAAA"
Show Postme: millennial optimism never existed, everyone fucking hated themselves also me: this "obama-era indie poptimism" music playlist that i found online a couple of weeks ago is way way way more comforting than i want to admit
Show Postevery poptimism song is basically "Hey Ya" by Outkast where the words are depressing but the beat is catchy and that's probably the bit people are missing
