i guess i can only hope that it's signaling a turn against this whole thing as the obvious violent bigotry that it is, in the more center-friendly, vibes-based frame of "bullying." it just feels bad to him. and, flatly, that was a key steppingstone for the progress of gay rights

I was told at one point that the protagonists of middle grade fiction always have to choose their friends and family over abstract ideals, but YA can go either way. So in addition to being aimed at adults, modern YA now has a level of maturity previously associated with not even 17yo, but 13yo.
