Unfortunately most of the population cannot appreciate a proof. It's not their fault, the education system focuses on application (numbers, trigonometry, statistics) more than anything.

The reason why the moon landing was so awe-inspiring is the knowledge that people did that. It was people in all their brilliance who managed to make that happen. Thinking the results of math are the exciting parts is the same as thinking the one small step is more important than the giant leap.

Math is like art. It's a creative thing that humans tend to naturally do. People do it as a hobby or professionally. It's also being done by AI, but not replaced by it. Mathematicians do math because they love it. They love the process. They love knowing that people - humans - did it.
