In his speeches lately he's really leaning into this "like you, I'm a slack-jawed yokel" nonsense. It really shouldn't work, by all rights his audiences should resent the obvious condescension, but then again there's a reason they're listening to him in the first place.

To be fair it has to be something that clear and obvious and salient to be a useful exercise. That is not everything but we can all come up with examples where "Trump vetoes democratic attempt to return thing Trump stole from you" would very obviously benefit the party overall.
