I think you are thinking too small, I believe all these CEOs in tech want the death of affordable computers so that everyone just has a thin client that requires cloud-based subscription services for everything (including, yes, chatgtp), even the more basic tasks.

people have joked the AI CEOs don’t want you to own a computer because they’ve made them so expensive. but it’s still wild to hear sam altman just come out and say it. it’s pretty obvious why: he wants people to be stuck using chatgpt instead of running a smaller, more targeted model locally.
